Mortise locks for business

Blog Post

No matter what industry you’re in, a commercial mortise lock can give you the confidence of maximum security for your business. These locks are a prime example of “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” That’s because their unique design has made them an industry go-to for reliability and strength for generations.

But as durable as these locks are, which one is right for your business? Our team at Lan Locksmith gets this question frequently! And, after having helped business owners here in Louisville install and maintain their mortise locks for years, we want to share a few of the models that we trust most.

What makes mortise locks different?

The “mortise” in mortise lock refers to the housing in the door that holds the locking hardware. Unlike in other locks, this design requires a large pocket so that the entirety of the locking hardware and metal casing is hidden within the door. This gives the mortise lock superior strength while making it less susceptible to picking and other entry attempts.

Despite the unique installation requirements, mortise locks can be used on glass, metal, wooden, and even fire rated doors as long as you keep a close eye on the specifications and local building codes.

Schlage L Series Grade 1 Mortise Lock

Schlage is a household name for both commercial and residential settings, so you know that their mortise lock is going to be reliable! Their L Series emcompasses a range of different styles and features to adapt to any kind of business or public setting, including schools, hospitals, storerooms, private offices, and more. You can find them with or without a deadbolt, electrified or mechanical, single- or multi-point, and in a range of different finishes and lever options. These locks can also be integrated into a master key system or outfitted with interchangeable cores.

As a Grade 1 lock, the L Series will deliver the longevity and security you need for your business. And, when it comes to fire safety, these locks can be installed on 3-hour fire doors.

Premier Lock Mortise

Premier Lock is another well-known name in the commercial security industry, and their range of versatile and high-quality mortise locksets will accommodate many different businesses. These mortise locks can be mounted on the left or right hand, and they come in two different finishes.

The Premier Lock Mortise line isn’t going to give you all of the bells and whistles of the Schlage L Series, but it’s also a much more budget-friendly option that will still deliver the security you need. For small or midsize businesses, or doors within your business that don’t need an electrified lock or Grade 1 security, this is a great affordable choice.

Yale 8800 Series Mortise Locks

Yale is a popular lock brand for residential settings, but they also have a line of commercial mortise locks that are neck-and-neck with the competition! The 8800 series is a range of mortise locks which can be installed for storage rooms, facility entrances, classrooms, apartments, offices, and more. They come in either single cylinder or double, depending on the needs of your business and security needs.

Any of the mortise locks in the series is considered a heavy duty lock with a Grade 1 rating for high traffic areas, and is appropriate for 3 hour Fire Doors. They come with a few different finishings and lever options to align with your branding aesthetic as well as accessibility code compliance.

Things to consider when ordering a commercial mortise lock

Here are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind when searching for the right mortise lock for your business:

  • The size of the backset. As we mentioned, mortise locks are unique in that their hardware is housed within the door. It’s important, then, to pay close attention to the backset specifications of the mortise lock you’re looking at. One with a narrow backset will be more appropriate for glass doors such as storefronts. In contrast, ones with a more standard backset will take up more space within the door.
  • Latchbolt, hook bolt, or deadbolt. Another important thing to consider is the locking mechanism of your mortise lock. Do you need the security of a deadbolt/cylinder combo? Do you need a hook bolt? Or, would you be better off with a latchbolt?

Electric strike or mechanical. And finally, will your mortise lock need to be controlled remotely by an electric strike system? Or will it always be opened by a mechanical key? Some mortise locks can integrate into a smart tech or electrified system while others lack that feature.
